Welcome to Ben’s Psychotherapy Practice
Health is a state of balance between our physical, metabolic and emotional well-being. In almost every case of physical illness I’veseen in 20yrs of practice, I’ve been astonished by absence of direct physical trauma, a fall, a hit, etc. Instead, the most relevant and obvious cause of their symptoms are the emotional contexts of my patients’ lives. The causes have included; divorce, the death of a close friend or family member, work strain, anxiety, house moves, redundancy, anniversaries, the births of children and more.
In the absence of somatic focused psychology trained health professionals to refer my patients to, I decided to dive deep into the most up to date, relevant and meaningful training to best equip me to help my patients fully recover their health.
Inspired by and trained under Dr Gabor Maté, I discovered that understanding what has, or is, happening in a patient's life is more important in helping me pinpoint their elusive issues, than simply asking, what's wrong?
I am now also certified in two different highly effective psychotherapeutic approaches: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Compassionate inquiry (Dr Gabor Maté’s approach). I continue to seek out new influencers and expand my therapeutic training expertise. (Download my full training CV.)
A peaceful mind and heart gives a peaceful body that doesn’t need to shout that you’re in pain, overwhelmed, stuck, worried, shamed, unworthy, not enough, broken, unlovable and more!
How Does Psychotherapy Help Heal a Physical Body?
Your physical body (soma) holds onto your unexpressed emotional experiences, even childhood upsets that you can’t consciously recall. Over time, old emotions stored in our bodies can become active physical issues. Science has documented this symbiotic relationship extensively. It is summarized best in the often quoted phrase: “Our issues are in our tissues.” For example, people who struggle to prioritize their own needs over others experience disproportionately high percentages of autoimmune issues.
“ I was feeling incredibly isolated, low and in physical pain, when I first started sessions with Ben. [They] helped shift something in me that boosted my ability to interview with a different energy and secure a new job.”
My trauma-informed somatic psychotherapeutic approach helps you uncover the roots of your physical and emotional pain. It can be a huge help in dealing with issues deemed ‘undiagnosable’ or ‘not real’ by conventional medicine or complementary approaches.
“Ben changed my life, for the better. He suggested [this] approach to a longer term problem. [When] we began looking deeper, he gently guided me to discover things about myself I had no idea [were there].”
Psychotherapy can also be helpful if you are suffering from what you consider emotional pain, feeling stressed, run down, permanently triggered, cross with the world, sad, overwhelmed, anxious, and more.
